Marguerittes is a French commune with 8586 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitania region .
geography
Marguerittes is located on the eastern outskirts of Nîmes . The community is located at the transition between the Costières plain and the Garrigue hills .
history
The area has been inhabited by hunters, gatherers and fishermen since early history. During Roman times it was used to supply the city of Nîmes with agricultural products. Many Roman villas were scattered here. Later Marguerittes was a small fortified village with a castle. Possibly the village originated from a villa called Virgelosa , from which the current name developed over time. The village was probably built near the aqueduct from Uzès to Nîmes, which also led over the famous Pont du Gard . Apparently there was another small aqueduct that brought water back from Nîmes to supply a Roman villa.
