history
The area was already used intensively for agriculture in ancient times. Warehouses for harvest products from this period have been found near the Mas des Chèvres . The name of the village seems to go back to Roman times, just like the famous Pont du Gard . The quarries from which the material for the bridge came could not be found because they continued to be used and worn down in the period that followed. The Pont du Gard was obviously built in the middle of the 1st century. It was still in use at the beginning of the 5th century. Probably during the next two centuries the aqueduct was abandoned. In 688 the Duke of Aquitaine had a castle built, which he placed under the protection of the Bishop of Mende . Only a tower remained of the fortress, which was later converted into a clock tower. In the 11th century the village consisted only of a small monastery and a few farmhouses around a church. In 1384 the village became part of the church dean of Remoulins . Sericulture flourished in the 16th century. Around 1730, rapid industrial progress made it possible for every family to own a loom. In 1789 the agricultural community had 885 inhabitants. In 1790 the municipality of Vers formed a canton together with Collias , of which it was the capital. In 1793 the harvest was destroyed by a flood of the Gardon river. In 1942 the region was occupied by the Germans and an ammunition store was set up. In August 1944, the Germans destroyed most of the villages, but Vers was spared.
Pont du Gard

Pont du Gard means bridge over the Gard, which means the river better known today as the Gardon , from which the name of the department is derived.
