Mairie from Redessan

Redessan is a French commune with 4115 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitania region .

geography

Redessan is located between Nîmes in the west and Beaucaire in the east . The border with the neighboring municipality of Jonquières-Saint-Vincent represents roughly the border between the Languedoc dialect and the Provencal dialect . Redessan could thus be described as a border town to the historical region of Provence .

The neighboring municipalities of Redessan are Bezouce and Meynes in the north, Jonquières-Saint-Vincent in the east, Beaucaire in the southeast, Manduel in the southwest and Marguerittes in the west. The municipality is traversed by the Buffalon brook.

Place name

The original place name, which was first mentioned in 925, was Villa Rediciano . The name is derived from the country house of a rich Roman consul . In 943 the place was called villa nova , but shortly afterwards this name disappeared, the name Rediciano remained . Until 1208 this changed to Redazanum and in 1306 the village was called Redessanum . After it was mentioned as Redessano in 1386 , Redessan first appeared under its current name in 1435.

history

The first settlement possibly took place around 600 years before Christ. In ancient times, Redessan was on the Roman road Via Domitia . This connected Rome with Spain. Numerous milestones have been preserved from this time . Redessan belonged to the diocese of Nîmes . The great migration that befell the region in 407 destroyed several places by fire, including Redessan. In 410 the place became the scene of a battle between Romans and barbarians . After the destruction of the place by the Sarrazenen , who attacked the Mediterranean area in the 8th century, monks helped the residents to rebuild the village. In 943, in anticipation of the end of the world in 1000, a couple donated large land holdings in what is now the municipality to the cathedral chapter of Nîmes.

The town's coat of arms illustrates the war-shaped situation: the tower depicted on it stands for protection, the sword symbolizes defense. The red blood of the enemy attacking the village is depicted on the right in the coat of arms.

Population development

In 1322 there were 28 families in Redessan. Only a generation later, in 1348, there were only six families left. In 1744 there were 240 people in the village. During the French Revolution in 1793 there were 714 residents. The population has only risen sharply since the 1968 census.

Attractions

Redessan's church is named Saint-Jean-Baptiste . It was named after John the Baptist . The building corresponds to the Romanesque architectural style.

During the Huguenot Wars , the old village church was looted by the Protestants in 1621. At the beginning of the 19th century it was in such poor condition that it had to be demolished and replaced with a new church.

Following a resolution passed in January 1818, the village clock tower was built at its current location. On the other hand, there were several complaints: Some citizens complained that the tower was too far outside the town center. The high cost of 12314 francs at the time was also criticized . According to an official, the costs are unfounded as the village only had around 800 inhabitants at the time. It is not known exactly when the clock tower was inaugurated. On June 24, 1873, however, it was partially destroyed by lightning. Their technology was renewed in 1874 and 1933.

Town twinning

The municipality of Redessan has a town partnership with the Spanish municipality of Benifairó de la Valldigna ( Valencia province ). The partnership came about through a couple who had relationships in the neighboring Spanish village of Tabernes de Valldinga . After signing a letter of intent in 1989, the partnership agreement was signed on September 24, 1993 in Redessan.
