The name probably comes from the Latin Saraceni , which means " Saracens ".

history

The village was probably founded in the early phase of the Roman occupation, possibly when the Pont du Gard was built. It is conceivable that the Romans founded the site to monitor the Gardon Valley , opposite the Théziers military camp . Sernhac was on the Roman road from Narbonne to Lyon . In 736, Charles Martell defeated the Saracens in a battle near Sernhac. Later the place was surrounded by high walls. There were only a few entrances, one of which was the Porte Sarrasine . In Roman times there was a small hamlet called Sainte Colombe nearby . This was destroyed during the migration period. A chapel was built there (called Sainte Colombe ), which is known to still exist in 1522. King Franz I lived in 1535 in the Cheval Blanc hostel (German: White Horse ) in Sernhac. In 1564 Charles IX. and a number of other important figures of the time in Sernhac. In 1647, the Black Penitents , an organization founded in 1559, built a chapel on the north wall of the church. In 1733 the church got its new bell. In 1790 the community already had 1,332 inhabitants. During the French Revolution, the church became a “temple” of the cult of reason . In 1860 the Lyon-Nîmes railway line was inaugurated. A year later, on February 11, 1861, the three and a half ton statue of the Virgin Mary was unveiled in the bell tower. By 1891 the population had decreased to 959 inhabitants. In 1902 the third bell of the church was consecrated. In 1930 the mill that supplied the village with water was badly damaged in a storm. In 1954 a public square was completed after the demolition of derelict buildings. In 1959 a market was set up in Sernhac.
