Garons is a French commune with 4895 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

geography

Garons is a few kilometers south of the city of Nîmes . The neighboring municipalities are Bouillargues in the north, Bellegarde in the west, Saint-Gilles in the southwest and Caissargues in the west. The commune belongs to the Costières de Nîmes wine region .

traffic

Due to its location directly on the A54 and with quick access to the A9 , Garons is well connected to the national road network. The location near the city of Nîmes also ensures a fast connection to long-distance rail transport. In addition, Garons has a regional airport with the Aéroport de Nîmes-Garons . This is in the immediate vicinity of the town center, but is part of the municipality of Saint-Gilles. It represents the connection of the city of Nîmes to the air traffic, but is mainly used by smaller airlines. It is also used for military purposes.

history

The hilly landscape had been inhabited for thousands of years. At the time of the Roman occupation there were two villas in what is now the municipality , the Villa de Campagne and the Villa de Scieure . The place Garons was first mentioned in writing in 640. At that time it passed from the possession of the Visigoth king Tulga into the possession of the Bishop of Nîmes , which did not change until the French Revolution . During the Huguenot Wars Garons remained true to the Catholic faith, also because it was still ruled by the bishop at that time. Nevertheless, the church and the castle were destroyed. Both were rebuilt in 1659. In 1704 Garons was hit by attacks by the camisards . They killed several people and destroyed some houses.

During the revolution, both the church and the castle were looted and later sold. As a result of the revolution, Garons fell to the municipality of Bouillargues. Around the same time there was a sharp increase in the population. In 1835 the place became an independent municipality by order of the king. In 1857 a new church was built, the construction of which was associated with numerous public discussions. In the 19th century Garons was very dependent on viticulture, which is why the phylloxera plague that began in 1863 damaged the place particularly badly. The winemaker Jacques Comy , elected mayor in 1871 , carried out research into combating phylloxera. His approach was considered very successful and was awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1882. Two important events took place in the community in the 1950s. On the one hand, agriculture has been raised to a new level thanks to modern irrigation technology. On the other hand, construction of the airport began in 1958. From 1962 onwards, several families of pied noirs and harkis settled in Garons.

Green spaces

The municipality has a total of around 20 hectares of public green space. The most important are the community park with eight hectares and the gardens of the Mairie with three hectares. After receiving an award from the département for its green spaces in 2000, the municipality was added to the list of Villages Fleuris .

Community partnerships

From 1995 the Greek town of Kalyvia , which is near Athens , was Garons' first partner municipality. In 2000 the northern Italian community Revigliasco d'Asti was added. In the same year Garons was awarded the Golden Star Prize for town twinning of the European Union . The desire for a further partnership arose, whereby the choice fell on the Rhineland-Palatinate Flörsheim-Dalsheim . The partnership agreement was signed during the visit of the French delegation to Flörsheim-Dalsheim in September 2012.

Sports

Every year in January, the place is the scene of a running event with a main run over ten kilometers. Around 400 runners take part. There is also another run for the students in Garons.
