The steady decline in population that began towards the end of the 19th century can essentially be traced back to the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture . More recently, the relative proximity to the city of Nîmes has contributed to a trend reversal in the number of inhabitants.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of Boissières lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as a self-sufficiency ; Production surpluses could sometimes be marketed in Nîmes. Wine was also grown, but the phylloxera crisis put a temporary end to this branch of the economy at the end of the 19th century. Today, only a few wine is grown and marketed through the appellations Gard and Pays d'Oc . The rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) is playing an increasing role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

The area was probably inhabited as early as Gallo-Roman times . In the 16th century, a population of around 650 people is mentioned; in addition, the castle was built during this time.

Attractions

  • Some of the town's houses are made of unprocessed natural stone.
  • The first mention of the Holy Saint Sirice et Sainte Julitte church consecrated in Boissères dates back to 1156. This was in the religious conflicts of the 17th century partly damaged and in a Protestant church ( temple converted). The small Romanesque church was demolished in 1966.
  • Despite its medieval appearance, the castle ( château ) was not built until the 16th century; an indication of the late construction period is the lack of battlements ( créneaux ). Three round towers and a square tower with a wall thickness of approx. 1.50 m each enclose a non-existent inner courtyard, which means that the rooms inside can be dimensioned quite large and representative.
  • The clock tower ( tour de l'horloge ) is a building from the mid-18th century. The clock itself may have come from the castle. The wrought iron top with hour or storm bell comes from the same period.
