geography

The municipality is located in the canton of Remoulins , where Fournès is the oldest village. Fournès is close to the A9 motorway and 20 kilometers from the cities of Nîmes and Avignon .

history

The slopes of Fournès have been inhabited since ancient times. Visigoths , Sarrazenes and finally the Franks populated the area. In 1211 the settlement was called Castrum de Fornisio , in 1386 as Magnesium . The hilltop village was protected by its walls and the castle built in 1150. The castle was destroyed during the Huguenot Wars .
The old village church in the upper part of the village was burned down in the 12th century.
