Lirac is a French commune with 904 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .
geography
Lirac is located about 20 kilometers northwest of Avignon on the orographic right side of the Rhône , near the A9 (E15) autoroute . The 976 hectare community is located at 121 m above sea level. NN Höhe and is known for its wine, which was exported far to the north via the Rhône waterway as early as the 16th century.

Viticulture in Lirac
Lirac is also the name of a wine-growing region in the wine region of the southern Rhône . Lirac wine has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée since October 14, 1947 (the statute was confirmed slightly modified on October 2, 1992). The appellation also includes the communes of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres, Saint-Geniès-de-Comolas and Roquemaure. The total cultivation area is around 642 hectares, from which 22,250 hectoliters of wine were produced in 2002. Mainly red wine and rosé wine are produced. The rosé wines are cheaper alternatives to the Tavel wine-growing region to the south . White wines are also produced to a lesser extent . The maximum permitted yields are set at 35 hl / ha; however, this value is regularly increased to 42 hl / ha.
The following grape varieties are used:
- White grape varieties: The leading grape varieties Bourboulenc , Clairette Blanche and Grenache Blanc (each max. 60%). May be admixed with Marsanne , Piquepoul Blanc , Roussanne , Ugni Blanc and Viognier (max. 30%)
- Red grape varieties: Grenache (min. 40%), Mourvèdre and Syrah (each min. 25%), Cinsault and Carignan (max. 10%) and Clairette Rose .
The white and rosé wines should not be stored for too long (max. 2 years) and can be enjoyed well chilled at around 10 ° C.
The red wines can be max. Store for 4–6 years and drink at around 16–17 ° C.
