history

town hall

The area was already settled in ancient times, but only gained importance with the construction of the Roman Via Domitia . As a remnant of this important Roman road that is still visible today, the Pont Ambroix , a bridge from the 1st century, can be found near Gallargues . In 1027 the ruler of Gallargues founded a monastery in the village. With the church of Saint-Martin , the place received its first church in the 12th century, although the associated cemetery had existed since the 8th century. Gallargues already attracted numerous pilgrims in the Middle Ages as part of the Camino de Santiago , something that has not changed to this day. In the 13th century the place fell under the rule of the French king. Under Philip IV , however, the citizens obtained certain rights of self-government. During the Huguenot Wars , the majority of the population joined Protestantism. In 1575 and 1628, Gallargues was the scene of battles.

On June 28, 2019, Gallargues-le-Montueux measured 45.9 ° C, the highest temperature in France since the beginning of the weather records.
