Toni Grand (* 1935 in Gallargues-le-Montueux , Gard department ; † November 29, 2005 in Mouriès , Bouches-du-Rhône department ) was a French sculptor .

life and work

Toni Grand was enrolled at the Art School in Montpellier and traveled to Paris several times to keep in touch with Marta Pan . Between 1962 and 1967, Grand made work from lead, steel and aluminum. Toni Grand began working primarily with wood in the 1970s.

“Since 1977 he has been combining wood with polyester coating and creating long-limbed objects in which the hollow spaces enclosed by the forms are an integral part of the work. In the mid-1980s he integrated massive, unhewn stones and animal bones into his sculptures.

With the help of a fish trapped in polyester, resin and fiberglass, Toni Grand repaired a work made of wood in 1987 that had since been damaged. The resulting work Réparation is the prelude to a series in which fish (a conger eel or eel) becomes the most important material in the work. "

Sculptures from the Réparation series were shown at documenta X in 1997 .
