Marta Pan (born June 12, 1923 in Budapest , Hungary , † October 12, 2008 in Paris , France ) was a French abstract sculptor of Hungarian descent.

life and work

Marta Pan was born in Budapest in 1923 as the daughter of the engineer Sigismond Pan and his wife Marie Pan, b. Piltzer, born. After finishing school she studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Budapest. In 1946 Pan moved to Paris , where she met Constantin Brâncuși and Fernand Léger . In 1952 she married the architect André Wogenscky (1916-2004), who was Le Corbusier's assistant . Her early sculptures were influenced by Le Corbusier's architecture.

In 1956 she created her sculpture Le Teck , which consists of two movable wooden parts. The choreographer Maurice Béjart created a ballet of the same name. Béjart's Ballet premiered on the roof of Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation building in Marseille , performed around the sculpture. Until 1960, all of Pan's sculptures contained this two-part construction method, which allowed the work to be changed.

Her highest and widely visible work is the metal sculpture Signe infini created in 1993 at the junction of the A6 and A46 motorways near Anse in France. In 2001 she was represented at the Blickachsen 3 exhibition in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe with the sculpture Floating Plastic 7 .

Marta Pan's abstract work is associated with geometric simplicity and themes of balance and equilibrium. It refers to its surroundings: to the landscape, changing light, wind and water as well as to the surrounding architecture. The materials used were wood, marble, metal, polyester and plexiglass.
