geography

Natural space and agricultural geography

The municipality of Bernis includes the natural landscape units Garrigues de Nîmes and the alluvial plain of the Vistrenque , which is traversed by the Vistre . The vast delta of the Vistre begins between Bernis and Aubord and merges into the Petite Camargue at Vauvert . Because of its proximity to the Vistre, Bernis is periodically hit by floods.

In terms of agricultural geography, Bernis is characterized by viticulture (→ Costières de Nîmes ), and there are still the first manades (Camargue animal breeding and Camargue horse breeding), which are located in the wetlands of the Vistre. There is also some asparagus cultivation .

Human and economic geography

The population development of Bernis is remarkable. The population almost tripled in the last third of the 20th century. Bernis is a member of the Communauté d'agglomération de Nîmes Métropole . The population development of Bernis is mainly due to the economic rise of Nîmes .
