The Vistre is a coastal river in France that runs in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . It rises in the local area of Bezouce , generally drains in a south-westerly direction in the greater area east of Nîmes through the Vistrenque landscape and flows after 49 kilometers in the municipality of Aigues-Mortes into the Canal du Rhône à Sète , which finally over the Chenal maritime de la mer à Aigues-Mortes reached the Mediterranean . In its lower reaches (around 10 kilometers) the river branches into a canalized section, Canal le Vistre , and into the so-called Vieux Vistre , which unite again before the mouth.
Hydrology
Between Vauvert and Codognan , the Vistre meets the irrigation canal Canal d'Irrigation du Bas-Rhône Languedoc (also called Canal Philippe Lamour ), water code number : ---- 1502, to which it gives up part of its water supply and on this way also to the Rhône drains.
history
Already at the end of the 17th century, the lower course of the river began to be straightened in order to drain the swamp areas in the estuary. This expansion also made it possible to transport goods on the water to a limited extent. The planning of a shipping canal from Nîmes to Sète was never realized.
