Le Cailar is a French commune with 2,412 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . Le Cailar belongs to the Arrondissement of Nîmes and the Canton of Aigues-Mortes .
geography
Le Cailar is located near the cities of Nîmes and Montpellier in the so-called Little Camargue . The Vistre and the Rhôny flow through the municipality . Le Cailar is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Condognan and Vergéze in the north, Vestric-et-Candiac in the northeast, Vauvert in the east, Saint-Laurent-d'Aigouze in the south and southwest, Aimargues in the west and Aigues-Vives in the northwest.
history
The area of the municipality is since the 6th century BC. Settled when it was still a lagoon port to the Mediterranean. The first written sources mention Castellus in the year 675. In 1382 the castle complex was razed.
