Montclus is a French commune with 206 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . Montclus is a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in France .

geography

Montclus is located 19 km northwest of Bagnols-sur-Cèze in the Cèze Valley on the Gorges du Cèze (Gorge of the Cèze).

history

In 1957, during excavations in the municipal area, evidence of settlement by sedentary fishermen from the Neolithic Age (8000 to 2000 BC) was found.

Montclus is first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In 1263 the Mons Serratus abbey was founded in the hamlet of Les Beaumes . There are still ruins of the abbey, which was used as a chapel by the Templars .

In 1275 Montclus was called Castrum Montecluso . It was named after the location of the place on a hill surrounded by mountains ( Latin mons clusus means "enclosed mountain").

In the same year a castle was built, the square donjon of which is still preserved. It is now privately owned and was classified as a Monument historique in 1977 .

Important occupations of the Montclusiens are viticulture , cultivation and distillation of lavender and the breeding of domestic sheep.
