history

The place where Lautrec is today was first settled by a Celtic tribe, the "Cambolectri Atlantici", and later by the Romans.

During a rest in transit, Charlemagne laid the foundation stone for the primitive Saint-Rémy church. This was located near what is now the Saint-Rémy wash house and has now disappeared.

Lautrec was founded around the year 940. The area called Lautrécois was located between the Dadou and the Agout in the center of the Albigeois . The first Viscount (Vice Count) of Lautrec was Sicard, son of Bernard, the Viscount of Albi, who divided his land between his two sons. However, the fertile Lautrécois region quickly aroused the interest of large knight families. In 1306 the French King Philip IV also secured part of the country for himself . The Lautrécois thus became a patchwork quilt that was ruled by various powers, above all the descendants of Isarn de Lautrec and the Counts of Foix .

In the Middle Ages Lautrec had up to 4500 inhabitants. In contrast to Cordes-sur-Ciel or Réalmont , Lautrec is not a 13th century bastide because it is much older and therefore does not have a right-angled street grid. Lautrec, with its narrow rows of houses and their red tile roofs winding around the hill La Salette , is located on a limestone plateau. Lautrec has an ideal defensive position. The Montlausain hill was fortified around the year 1000 . There the Viscounts built their “castrum”. This was surrounded by two walls, each with eight gates. The community sought protection behind its city walls and moats. Little of these structures can be seen today - for example the Caussade Gate. However, they were often needed: Lautrec suffered greatly from the great wars of the Ancien Régime and the Albigensian Crusade , in which the Viscount alternated with the Crusaders and the Count of Toulouse . Lautrec was also ravaged by the Hundred Years' War and, above all, the Huguenot Wars . In contrast to its big neighbor Castres, Lautrec was a Catholic stronghold and therefore rebelled against him. After all, the French Revolution did not spare this area either. Many Benedictines and Franciscans were expelled from the region.
