Autoire - the site

Autoire ( Occitan Altoire ) is a French commune with 358 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the Occitania region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). The place is one of the " Most Beautiful Villages in France ".

location

Autoire is located in the northeast of the Quercy landscape, which is rich in cultural and culinary attractions, about 73 kilometers (driving distance) to the northeast of Cahors . It is about 8 kilometers to the east to the canton capital of Saint-Céré ; Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne is about 19 kilometers north. The towns of Carennac and Martel, which are also among the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”, are located about 13 and 30 kilometers to the northwest; Loubressac is about 5 kilometers northwest. The medieval pilgrimage town of Rocamadour is about 23 kilometers to the south-west.

In the 19th century the place always had between 460 and 630 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture , the population fell significantly in the first half of the 20th century. After the low in 1962, however, a slight increase can be observed again.

economy

On the hillside you can still see some vegetable gardens, but the income from tourism (hotels, restaurants) now plays the largest role in the economic life of the community. However, the small, somewhat remote place is rarely overcrowded.

history

Little is known about the history of Autoire. The place was probably formerly part of the Vice-County Turenne . As far as we know, there were no notable attacks during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).

Attractions

Autoire - Château de Limargue
  • The village of Autoire, which is medieval and idyllic in its entirety, has changed little in recent years. Unlike in neighboring Loubressac, the place offers a mixture of natural stone or half-timbered facades .
  • The Château des Anglais from the 11th / 12th centuries. The 19th century was recognized as a monument historique in 1925 . It is located below a rock overhang ( abri ) above the place.
  • The 17th century Château de Bousqueilles has been converted into a hotel. It has been recognized as a monument historique since 1991 .
  • The 15th century Château de Limargue impresses with a high round tower with a small stair tower on the side; it cannot be visited (private property). The tower has been designated as a monument historique since 1929 .
  • The Saint-Pierre church with its dominant crossing tower , which stands a little above the village, has three naves inside. While the three-legged apse and the domed vaulting of the crossing - resting on pendentives - date back to medieval times (12th century), the nave and west facade were redesigned in the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of the figures on the console frieze on the exterior of the Romanesque apse are also noteworthy. Church construction has been included in the list of historical monuments since 1942 .
  • At the southern boundary of the municipality, where the D673 département road joins the D38, there is a panoramic view of the Cirque d'Autoire , an imposing basin , the shape of which is reminiscent of a natural amphitheater . A waterfall can also be seen in close proximity.
