Vice County of Turenne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Carolingian county, perhaps also just vice-county Turenne (at that time still called Tournès) with the main town Turenne is attested since the beginning of the 9th century. The castle, however, already existed in the 8th century and was held by an Aquitaine nobleman. Waifar , Duke of Aquitaine , was besieged here in 767 by Pippin the Younger .

A Count Rodulf revolted against Ludwig the Pious and was deposed in 839. Around 860 his successor recognized the sovereignty of the Count of Toulouse . His descendant Bernard is Viscount de Turenne in the 10th century. After Bernard's son Adhémar II, his brother-in-law Archambaud I de Comborn took over the vice-county. Archambaud's son Ebles I was thus master of Comborn, Turenne and Ventadour . At his death the inheritance was divided, his eldest son Guillaume received Turenne.

Turenne's descendants held Turenne until Marguerite's death in 1311, which the vice-county gave to her husband, Bernard VIII. De Comminges . Bernard's son and his third wife, Mathé de L'Isle-Jourdain , died as a toddler, followed by his sister Cécile in 1339. She sold Turenne in 1350 for 145,000 florins to her sister Aliénor and her husband, Guillaume II. Rogier 2nd Count von Beaufort-en-Vallée († 1395), nephew of Pope Clement VI. and brother of Pope Gregory XI. (Pierre Roger de Beaufort). Raymond-Louis Roger, son of Guillaume II and better known as Raymond de Turenne († 1413), was one of the most fearsome robber barons in the south of France. His daughter Antoinette married the Marshal of France Jean II Le Maingre , known as Boucicaut , in 1393 . After her and her aunt Aliénor, Turenne went to the children of a brother of Guillaume Roger. Anne Roger brought the vice-county into her marriage to Agne IV. De la Tour in 1444 (dispensation), her descendants took the name de La Tour d'Auvergne and remained in the possession of the vice-county into the 18th century.

The most famous Turenne is Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne , Marshal of France , who got the sovereign Duchy of Bouillon and the sovereign Principality of Sedan due to his military achievements .

In addition to the Vicomtes de Turenne, claims to the title were made due to descendants in the female line of the early Vicomtes de Turenne; the claims are from the end of the 13th century at the house Pons , in which since then the title Vicomte de Turenne-en-partie has been held.
