history

Beaufort, already known as Bellum Forte in Roman times , was a county in the Duchy of Anjou in the Middle Ages . Jeanne de Laval , who was married to King René I , retained the rights to the county of Beaufort after his death in 1480 and took one of her two residences there (the other was in Saumur ). She campaigned for legal peace, including by regulating previously disputed grazing rights. Because of her generous and kind nature according to tradition, she is still revered in the area today.

With effect from January 1, 2016, the municipalities of Beaufort-en-Vallée and Gée were merged to form a Commune nouvelle with the name Beaufort-en-Anjou. It belonged to the Arrondissement of Angers and the canton of Beaufort-en-Vallée .
