family
Henri was the only son of Francois III. de La Tour d'Auvergne, Viscount de Turenne, Baron de Montgascon (1526–1557), and his wife Éléonore de Montmorency.
His first marriage was in October 1591 with Charlotte de La Marck (1574–1594), sovereign Duchess of Bouillon and Princess of Sedan. She brought her rich possessions into the marriage and died in childbed in 1594 after the newborn son had died on the day of his birth.
By contract dated April 16, 1595, Henri took Elisabeth von Oranien-Nassau , daughter of Wilhelm the Silent , as his second wife. He had eight children with her:
- Louise (* 1596; † 1606)
- Marie (* 1600; † 1665), ∞ Henri de La Trémoille, duc de Thouars , Prince of Talmont
- Julienne Catherine (* 1604; † 1637), ∞ Francois II. De Roye de La Rochefoucauld, Count of Roucy
- Fréderic-Maurice (* 1605; † 1652), Duke of Bouillon
- Elisabeth (* 1606; † 1685), ∞ Guy Aldonce de Durfort, Marquis of Duras and Lorges (1605–1665)
- Henri (* 1611; † 1675), Marshal General of France
- Henriette Catherine († 1677), ∞ Amaury III. Gouyon, marquis de La Moussaye, comte de Quintin
- Charlotte († 1662)
Until 1610, Henri also took care of Friedrich von der Pfalz , the son of his sister-in-law, the Electress Luise Juliana of Oranien-Nassau .
Life
The Duke fought with Henry IV against the Catholic League , but fled to Geneva in 1603 when he was about to be arrested for the Duke of Biron's conspiracy against the King.
In 1606 he was reconciled with the king and returned to court. Under the regent Maria de Medici he became a member of the Privy Council, which he left because of a dispute with the Queen.
He participated in a number of pro-Calvinist intrigues and later retired to his independent duchy of Bouillon, which he had acquired by marrying his first wife. He founded a library and the Protestant Academy Sedan before he died in this city on March 25, 1623.
