The Castle of Sedan ( French Château de Sedan ) is located in the French city of Sedan , which is located in the Ardennes department of the Champagne-Ardenne region in northeastern France near Belgium . The medieval castle complex with its 35,000 m², which extend over seven floors, is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The castle has been classified as a Monument historique since January 4, 1965 .
history
Around 1424 Eberhard II von der Marck-Arenberg began building the Sedan Castle. Originally there was a Benedictine monastery there , which was first mentioned in 1306. Now, within six years, a mansion with two towers was built around a church, with parts of the donjon being built from the monastery. When Eberhard II died, his son Johann II von Marck-Arenberg strengthened the castle complex, but it was only his grandson Robert I de La Marck that completed the construction work. In 1530, the fortress walls of the manor house were modernized by building a ring wall and supplemented by gun ramparts .
Henry de Turenne was born in Sedan Castle in 1611 .
Today the castle is a tourist attraction. It houses the city's tourist information office and a museum. There is also a hotel in the old walls.
