Parish Church of Saint-Maurice

Parish Church of Saint-Maurice

The parish was founded in 1146 as property of the abbey mentions of Figeac. Most of the current church is undoubtedly from the late 12th or early 13th century. Two side chapels were added at the end of the 15th or the beginning of the 16th century on both sides of the yoke of the nave that adjoins the choir . In the 19th century, these side chapels were lengthened by a yoke so that they were converted into side aisles . As the years on the keystones of the vault show, this was done in 1842 for the southern chapel and in 1848 for the northern chapel. In the same period, the west facade was rebuilt according to the taste of the time in the classical style and the top part of the bell tower was renovated.

The nave of the church has a single nave and is three bays long and terminated with a flat apse . In the east wall of the apse, under the current window, the lower part of the original and now walled-up window located in the longitudinal axis can be seen. The longhouse and choir have a barrel vault , the two side chapels are vaulted with ribbed vaults. The bell tower rises above the yoke that adjoins the choir. The north and south walls are enlivened inside by three blind arcades . The capitals of the nave are decorated with a simple decoration in the form of stylized leaves. The fighters in the side chapels are decorated with human heads. Their keystones carry a blessing hand or four heads that form a cross.
