Until the middle of the 19th century, the place always had between 1,250 and 1,500 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has decreased continuously since the second half of the 19th century to the lowest level of the last decades.

economy

In the Haut-Quercy , agriculture was primarily run for self-sufficiency , which included viticulture until the 19th century, but which was temporarily given up completely after the phylloxera crisis . Today - in addition to cattle and poultry farming - tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) plays a major role in the economic life of the municipality. Wine is again produced in the municipality, which over the appellations Comté Tolosan , and Côtes du Lot is marketed.

history

In the high Middle Ages, Aynac was disputed between the landlords ( seigneurs ) of Castelnau and Cardaillac ; since the 14th century it has belonged to the vicegrace of Turenne , whose members owned the castle and town until the French Revolution .

Attractions

Church Saint-Geniès
  • The parish church of Saint-Geniès was built in the second half of the 12th century, but its single-nave nave and portal facade were thoroughly redesigned at the end of the 19th century. Only the eastern parts ( apse , transept with apses and basement of the octagonal crossing tower ) seem to largely correspond to the original condition, which is made clear by the other type of roof covering - stone shingles ( lauzes ) instead of slate. The building was recognized as a monument historique back in 1913 .
  • Even though the corner towers with opposing tips are reminiscent of the late Middle Ages, the castle of Aynac largely dates from around 1600. It was built by Jaquette de Ricard de Genouillac , the sister of the lord of the castle of Assier , about 15 kilometers to the south . The many rectangular windows of the defense tower ( donjon ) seem to have been added in the 19th or 20th century. The castle is owned by the municipality, which rents it out on special occasions; it was recognized as a monument historique in 1988 .
  • A wash house ( lavoir ) from the 19th century has also been preserved.
