Cahus is a French commune with 206 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Figeac and the canton of Cère et Ségala (until 2015: canton of Bretenoux ).

Local tradition wants the name of the community to be derived from the Latin cahus or the Occitan caüs ( German  kauz ). Cassagne argues against it that there is no example of a French toponym that is a derivation of the place name of this bird species. In addition, the place is mentioned in the ecclesiastical cadastre of the Middle Ages in the forms of Calhus , Cautio , Caucio , Cahussio , Cautz or Caus . Some toponymists argue that the name comes from an estate owned by Cabutius or Catucius in Gallo-Roman times .

The inhabitants are called Cahussiens and Cahussiennes .

Parish Church of Saint-Benoît

The first mention of the earlier church is found in a charter from 936. It was in the collation of the Bishop of Cahors . The remains of the simple nave allow the first expansion of the church to be dated to the 13th century. In 1537 a side chapel or aisle was added , according to Abbot Clary . Extensive construction work was carried out in 1764, as evidenced by the date on the lintel of a window in the south wall. According to the Abbot Clary, the apse was rebuilt in 1854 .

The main nave is equipped with a barrel vault , the apse with a cauldron vault , the side aisles with a ribbed vault with lines . The keystones are decorated with a cross, the noun sacrum IHS or the lily symbol. The fighters of the vaults are decorated with rod ornamentation or sculpted in the form of human heads, as can also be seen on the keystones of the arches in the side aisles.
