Calvignac ( Occitan : Calvinhac ) is a southern French municipality in the Lot département in the Occitanie region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). It has 207 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park .
location
Calvignac is at an altitude of about 140 meters above sea level. d. M. above the south bank of the Lot River on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central in the area of the Causse de Limogne . The next larger city, Cahors , is about 42 kilometers (driving distance) to the west. The next larger town about ten kilometers away is Limogne-en-Quercy .

Until the middle of the 19th century, the place always had between 640 and 750 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has decreased continuously since the second half of the 19th century to the lowest level of recent years.
economy
In the Haut-Quercy agriculture was traditionally practiced, which also included viticulture until the 19th century, but which was almost completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis. Today - in addition to cattle and poultry farming - tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) plays a major role in the economic life of the municipality.
history
In the High Middle Ages, Calvignac was a vice county ( vicomté ). The place itself was repeatedly besieged and captured by the English during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). During the Huguenot Wars (1562-1598) the place suffered from religiously motivated clashes between Catholics and Protestants .
Attractions
- There are still sparse remains of masonry from a medieval castle in the village.
- A hoof buck ( travail ) from the 18th or 19th century was used to fix the animals (horses, cattle, donkeys) during shoeing or hoof care.
- The parish church ( Église Saint-Étienne ) is a very rustic three-aisled building from the Middle Ages with a flat apse and barrel vaults . Such buildings are rarely preserved, as they were mostly demolished in the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance or at the latest in the 19th century and replaced by new churches.
- A rocky promontory ( Rocher de la Baume ) offers beautiful views of the Lot valley.
