The French commune of Limogne-en-Quercy is located in the Lot department in the Occitanie region . The small town with 762 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park .
location
Limogne-en-Quercy lies at an altitude of about 320 meters above sea level. d. M. on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central in the area of the Causse de Limogne . The nearest town, Cahors , is about 35 kilometers (driving distance) to the west. The long-distance hiking trail GR 65 leads through Limogne-en-Quercy , which largely follows the historical course of the French Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis ).

Until the middle of the 19th century, the place always had between 1,100 and 1,500 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has steadily declined since the second half of the 19th century to the lowest level in the 1960s.
economy
In the Haut-Quercy agriculture was traditionally practiced, which also included viticulture until the 19th century, but which was almost completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis. Today - in addition to cattle and poultry farming - tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) plays a major role in the economic life of the municipality.
history
There are prehistoric finds in the Limogne-en-Quercy area and several dolmens are evidence of human habitation in the Neolithic . The remains of a Roman road were discovered from ancient times . In the Middle Ages, the area was ruled by the Cènevières family and the Benedictine abbey of Marcilhac-sur-Célé .
Culture and sights
There are a large number of large stone tombs ( dolmens ) in the region
- The Dolmen du Lac d'Aurie, also known as Pech-Lapeyre , was recognized as a Monument historique as early as 1889 .
- The dolmen Agranel , Ferrières-Haut , Joncas and Pajot were placed under protection in 1959.
- A small regional museum of folk art ( Maison du Pays de Limogne ) is dedicated to the living and working conditions of earlier times.
- The neo-Gothic parish church dates from 1861.
- A roofed washhouse ( lavoir ) from the 19th century stands by a pond .
Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis )
In addition to two pilgrim hostels (French: Gîte d'étape ), there are private accommodations (French: Chambre d'hôtes ) and a campsite. There is also a tourist office on site. This variant of the Camino de Santiago continues over the limestone plateau of the Causse de Limogne to Varaire and shortly afterwards joins the Célé variant, before touching the Lot Valley in Cahors for the last time. The road D911 leads to Cahors.
