Luzech ( okzitan. Lusèg ) is a French commune with 1815 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the French region of Occitania .

geography

The municipality is located in the Quercy between Fumel and Cahors . The village of Luzech is located on an isthmus 90 meters wide, which the Lot River bypasses in a loop. The central square of the village is located on a former, now filled in canal, which was created around 1840 to shorten shipping traffic.

history

Luzech was already inhabited in prehistoric times (cave Pech de La Nene). Before the Roman conquest, the Gauls built an oppidum here. Excavations on Impernal Hill have revealed the remains of walls and buildings from the Gallic and Roman eras. Luzech was the capital of one of the four baronies of Quercy and was owned by the de Luzech family from the 11th to the early 17th centuries. In 1188 it was taken by Richard the Lionheart, later Luzech falls into the hands of the Albigensians. During the crusade of the early 13th century, the fortress was captured and burned by the crusaders of Simon de Montfort. Later the place was owned by Guillaume de Cardaillac, Bishop of Cahors. Les Chapt de Rastignac, a noble family from the Limousin, inherited Luzech in 1600. Their descendants, Alfred de la Rochefoucauld, sold the castle to the city in the middle of the 18th century.
