The French commune of Varaire is located in the Lot department in the Occitanie region . The small town with 314 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park . The long-distance hiking trail GR 65 leads through Varaire , which largely follows the historical course of the French Way of St. James, Via Podiensis .

Geography and history

Varaire is located on the southwestern edge of the Massif Central in the regional nature park Causses du Quercy , on the border between the Causse de Limogne and the Quercy Blanc .
The next town is Cahors , which can be reached in a westerly direction, through the Causse du Blanc, via the D19 and D22 after about 30 kilometers of road. The closest major French cities are Toulouse (87 km) in the south, Bordeaux (191 km) in the north-west and Montpellier (191 km) in the south-east.

In the Varaire area there are dolmens that are evidence of human habitation as early as the Stone Age . The first beginnings of the place go back to a Roman settlement on the Roman road between Bibon ( Cahors ) and Segudunum ( Rodez ). The town's castle was built by the Cardaillac family and added a tower and other buildings in the first half of the 13th century. The Cardaillac family provided the Bishop of Cahors several times. After its destruction in the Hundred Years War , Varaire was rebuilt.

Way of St. James ( Via Podiensis )

In the Middle Ages there were two hostels and a hospice in the village. Today there is only a pilgrim hostel (French: Gîte d'étape ) and sparse private quarters. This variant of the Camino de Santiago continues over the limestone plateau of the Causse du Blanc and shortly afterwards joins the Célé variant, then touching the Lot Valley in Cahors for the last time . The route D19 –D22 leads to Cahors as a road connection .

Attractions

The tower and the house of Cardaillac form the core of the place. These buildings are the only visible evidence of the Middle Ages .
