Bouziès - Château des Anglais

Bouziès ( Occitan : Bosiès ) is a small community with 84 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the French region of Occitania (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality is part of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park .

location

The two districts of Bouziès ( Bouziès-Bas and Conduché ) are about a kilometer apart on both sides of the Lot River , but Bouziès Bas belongs to the municipality of Saint Géry-Vers . The area lies in the heart of the Quercy countryside, which is rich in cultural and culinary attractions . The capital of the Quercy, Cahors , is about 25 kilometers (driving distance) to the southwest. It is about six kilometers to the west to the former canton capital of Saint-Géry . Saint-Cirq-Lapopie , one of the “ Most Beautiful Villages in France ” is only about five kilometers southeast of Bouziès-Haut. The prehistoric cave of Pech Merle is also only five kilometers northeast.

In the 19th century the place had between 300 and 400 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the population continuously declined to the current lows in the 20th century.

economy

The small town of Bouziès still lives from agriculture and forestry; In the narrow valley of the Lot, however, both are only possible on the plateaus. Income from tourism (café, restaurant, boat rental and houseboat holidays on the Lot) also play a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

The place name was also written Boziers , Voziers or Voziès in medieval times . Probably during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) a castle was built into a rocky ravine just outside the village - but by whom it is unclear. It is popularly called the Château des Anglais .

Attractions

  • The Château de Condat - an unadorned two-winged building from the 15th century - was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is privately owned. A round pigeon house ( pigeonnier ) belongs to the property. The building was recognized as a monument historique in 1987 .
Bouziès - towpath on the Lot
  • Only a few kilometers outside of the village are the ruins of the so-called Château des Anglais , a fortification built into a rock wall from the Hundred Years War.
  • The parish church is a single-nave building from the 19th century with a neo-Romanesque tower.
  • The limestone overhangs ( abris ) along the Lot, caused by leaching, but also by human intervention, were used as towpaths ( chemin de halage ), because until the beginning of the 20th century, goods and people were transported on the Lot by barges. Part of the rock overhang has been redesigned by the sculptor David Monnier into an abstract wall sculpture about 15 meters long.
  • Two rock caves with prehistoric stone carvings and other finds were classified as Monuments historiques in 1980 and 1993 and thus placed under protection. They are located on private property and cannot be viewed.

Others

Some shots of the film Saint-Jacques… La Mecque , made in 2005 by the French director Coline Serreau, were shot in Bouziès.
