Puy-l'Évêque ( Occitan : Puèg l'Avesque ) is a southern French municipality with 1,973 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the Occitanie region . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Cahors and is the capital of the canton of Puy-l'Évêque . The inhabitants are called Puy-l'Évêquois .
geography
Puy-l'Évêque is located on the north bank of the Lot River in the old cultural landscape of the Quercy . Puy-l'Évêque is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Cassagnes in the north, Pomarède in the northeast, Prayssac and Pescadoires in the east, Grézels in the south and southeast, Floressas in the south, Vire-sur-Lot in the southwest, Duravel in the west and Montcabrier in the northwest.
The former route nationale 111 (today's D811) runs through the municipality .
history
The history of the place is unclear. Although a Roman road runs through the community, the village only became known as a Cathar stronghold before the start of the Albigensian Crusade .
