Berganty is a French commune with 116 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lot department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Cahors and the canton of Causse et Vallées (until 2015: canton of Saint-Géry ).
The name of the community probably comes from the old form Bergantinum , which was derived from the ancient Celtic word berg ( German mountains, hill ). Some etymologists see the origin of the toponym in the Languedocian word bragant ( German highwayman, highwayman ). Thus, the village was a refuge for thieves and looters in earlier times.
The inhabitants are called Bergantynois and Bergantynoises .

Parish Church of Saint Martin
The semicircular apse could date from the 12th or 13th century. But it could also be the result of a new building, as the irregularly formed masonry made of ashlar and quarry stone suggests. The window in the longitudinal axis is bricked up. Two relatively thin buttresses extend to the cornice , which is supported by the console . One of them carries the sculptural head of a person. The year "1859" on the north side of the nave probably belongs to a first building project in the 19th century, during which the two aisles could have been built. Between 1884 and 1889, the bell tower in the west was built according to plans by the architect of the department, Jean-Gabriel Rodolosse. It bears the year "1888".
