The Palais Vest is an inner-city shopping center in Recklinghausen ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), which is located on the edge of the old town directly on the historic Wallring . Only opened in September 2014, the Palais Vest is one of the most modern shopping centers in Germany and, with more than 40,000 m² of retail space, it is also one of the largest centers in the city center of the Ruhr Metropolis .

Location and transport links

The Palais Vest is located directly in the city center on Kaiserwall, opposite the town hall. It is therefore within the ramparts and is therefore part of the old town. Today's shopping center is largely in the same place as the former Löhrhof Center from the 1970s, namely between the actual Löhrhof in the west, Schaumburgstrasse in the north, Kaiserwall in the east and Löhrhofstrasse in the south. Compared to the old building, however, the Palais Vest has been expanded. It also takes up the area between Löhrgasse and Hermann-Bresser-Straße, which was previously used as a parking area. In order to connect the two individual buildings of the shopping center with one another, Löhrhofstrasse was shortened by around 200 meters in the direction of the town hall, so that today the shopping center can only be accessed from the south via the newly created Hermann-Bresser-Strasse.

The Palais Vest is connected to the federal motorway network via the Recklinghausen-Herten junction of the A 43 and the Recklinghausen-Süd junction of the A 2 (E 34). It can be reached by public transport via Recklinghausen main train station and the Viehor bus stop.

history

The Palais Vest is the successor center to the Löhrhof Center , a significantly smaller shopping center from the 1970s at the same location. However, after the Löhrhof Center had turned out to be too small and too unattractive compared to the other shopping centers built in the meantime, such as Limbecker Platz in Essen , calls for a change in the situation at that time became louder. In a survey carried out in Recklinghausen it became clear that the majority of the citizens questioned wanted more choice in a higher-quality range of goods. Subsequently, in the Recklinghausen town hall, discussions were held as to whether the Löhrhof Center should undergo a comprehensive renovation, build a new shopping center or, after demolishing the existing house, fill the gap with small-scale buildings in the old architectural style. In 2009 politicians decided to demolish the old center, which should be replaced by a new, larger one. After Mfi AG expressed interest in the project, the center and the adjacent high-rise (also from the 1970s) were demolished or blown up.

After several months of construction, the Palais Vest, which was initially built under the name " Recklinghausen Arcaden ", was opened to the public on September 16, 2014.

The project of the new shopping center building was initially carried out under a different name for a long time. The project began as Recklinghausen Arcaden and the construction was initially known under this name - with which it would have entered the history of some similar shopping centers, because the name " Arcaden " has already been used in several German cities for their respective malls (such as at the "Regensburg Arcaden"). It was not until the beginning of 2014, around six months before the opening, that mfi, the investor, announced Palais Vest as the official and final name for the shopping center. The renaming caused astonishment and sometimes even displeasure among the population as well as among the new tenants.

The second part of the name, Vest , stands for the historical territorial designation Vest Recklinghausen , a judicial and sovereign district of the electors and archbishops of Cologne between the Emscher and Lippe between the end of the 12th century and 1802, from which today's Recklinghausen district emerged in 1816 . According to the investor, this is intended to express the connection and relevance of the shopping center for the Recklinghausen area.

construction

The Palais Vest is a four-storey low-rise building with two upper floors, one ground floor, one basement and a parking deck with 750 spaces. The shopping center consists of two central individual buildings, which are connected to one another in the area of the former Löhrhofstrasse by a glazed transition building. Within the center, the building is characterized by a row of shops, some of which are offset. There is one central row of shops on each floor, which is only structurally separated in the basement (i.e. for each individual building).
