Recklinghausen Hauptbahnhof is the most important passenger train station in the city and the Recklinghausen district . It is located on the Wanne-Eickel-Hamburg railway line and, with the bus station in front of it, is the starting point for several bus routes of the Vestische trams . With around 17,000 travelers per day, it is assigned to station category 3 and belongs to Münster station management.

location

The main train station and the associated railway system is located not far from the Wallring at Große-Perdekamp-Straße 2, 45657 Recklinghausen , northeast of the city center in the north quarter. The reception hall and the adjacent low-rise buildings are located on the corner of Große-Perdekamp-Straße / Springstraße / Europaplatz . In the east, the railway facilities border on Ossenbergweg .

Recklinghausen Central Station has three exits: the main exit in the west leads to Europaplatz and the bus station located on it . Also in the west, but further north, there is a stepless side exit, which leads from platform 1 towards the Kunsthalle and the long-distance bus stop. Since 2012, the station has had an exit on Ossenbergweg , which gives the eastern residential areas and the Blumenthal campus on Ludwig-Erhard-Allee a direct route to the train. Since September 2016 there has been a bike station south of the bus station, which offers 12 bike boxes and 140 mostly covered parking spaces.

history

Commemorative plaque of the Deutsche Bundesbahn for the 5000th electrified route kilometer

The original main station was opened in 1870 by the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft as part of the construction of the Hamburg-Venloer Bahn . The first station building was a clinker brick building, which with its size and architecture reflected the time of that time, but seems a bit oversized for the size of the city at that time. A new building was planned as early as the 1930s to replace the various previous buildings.

During the final phase of the Second World War , on April 1, 1945, a heavy bomb attack largely destroyed the station buildings and tracks. Today the bunker opposite the train station reminds of this , in which the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen was established in 1950 . At the beginning of the 1960s, construction began on today's reception hall, which was opened in 1962. Today the clock tower is an outstanding feature of the architecture of the station building with its glass front. The new bus station was built in 1998/1999. At the same time, the lobby was also renovated. Parts of the interior and the technical equipment in the building as well as the platform area on track 1 including paving and lighting were renewed. The last major investment at the main station was the creation of the new east access and the associated extension of the passenger tunnel, which was built barrier-free according to the specifications and has now connected the city center with the east quarter since it opened. 75 percent of the costs of around 1.5 million euros were borne by the federal government, the rest was borne by the city itself. Due to the sometimes poor condition of the platforms and roofs, the public and local politicians are requesting renovations and visual enhancements the pedestrian underpass louder. The clock tower was painted red in summer 2018 and DB Station & Service announced further investments in passenger information in connection with the installation realized in September 2019 by the artist Jan Hoeft for 70,000 € in various areas of the aforementioned access .

Trivia

Until the station was renovated in 1999, there was a plaque on the house platform for the 5,000th  electrified kilometer of the Deutsche Bundesbahn . The tablet has been lost since the work was completed.

Long-distance transport

Recklinghausen Hauptbahnhof is a system stop for several long-distance routes operated by Deutsche Bahn . An ICE on the Munich - Münster route , an EC to Klagenfurt and the InterCity line 35 every two hours arrive at the main train station late in the evening . In addition, Recklinghausen has a daily direct connection with the federal capital through a pair of trains on IC line 32. Individual trains from other intercity lines also stop at the station. On Fridays and Sundays, some IC trains from Stralsund or Hamburg-Altona to Cologne and vice versa stop at Recklinghäuser Hbf .

Regional traffic

In regional traffic, the main station is served by two regional express lines - the Rhein-Haard-Express , RE 2 and the Niers-Haard-Express, RE 42 - as well as a line of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr (S 2 from Dortmund , Mondays until Friday during the day). The S-Bahn runs every hour, the two RE lines also run every hour. Due to the staggered timetable, traffic to the Münsterland or the Rhine-Ruhr region takes about half an hour. In addition, additional trains of the RE 42 run on the Essen-Recklinghausen- Haltern am See route during rush hour , which then condense the timetable in both directions to three connections per hour.

Expansion of the access offer

As part of the realignment of the RRX (Rhein-Ruhr-Express) project, Recklinghausen's main train station should also benefit from new connections. The responsible bodies decided to reactivate passenger traffic on the Hamm – Oberhausen line (“Hertener Bahn”). This will create a new S-Bahn connection between Recklinghausen via Herten in the direction of Essen – Wuppertal – Hagen. From 1.7.20 SEV will be offered between Recklinghausen Hbf and Gladbeck West station .
The construction of the intermediate stops in Herten and Gelsenkirchen Buer Nord is still not foreseeable.

In addition, the previous local transport line RB 42 (Münster – Essen) was extended at the end of 2016 as part of the RRX advance traffic via Duisburg and Krefeld to Mönchengladbach , so that Recklinghausen again has a direct connection to the Lower Rhine region . The connection, now known as the Niers-Haard-Express (RE 42), runs from Essen on the previous route of the RE 11, so that the frequency to Duisburg increases to two connections per hour. Regardless of the RRX project, the creation of a new connection from Recklinghausen with partial use of the route from Wanne-Eickel to Bochum is being discussed both in the VRR and at the municipal level . According to citizens and politicians, this should bring the rush hour traffic of the congested Autobahn 43 onto the rails and thus represent a real alternative for commuters. Although the Recklinghausen town hall has already spoken out in favor of implementing the plan, the result is still completely open.
