The Goldberg Tunnel in Hagen is the longest classic railway tunnel in North Rhine-Westphalia until the route expansion began in the 1970s and 1980s.

It is located on the section of the Volmetalbahn, which was built in 1874, between Hagen Hbf and the Hagen-Oberhagen stop to cross under the Wehringhausen district . The access to the tunnel begins from both portals with a long curve. The 2200 m long structure passes under the 266 m high Goldberg and thus about the Bismarck tower and the Eugen Richter tower .

The tunnel was only built between 1906 and 1910 as part of the expansion of the Volmetalbahn into the main line and has since replaced a railway line through the center of Hagen city center. The old route represented a considerable impediment to road traffic due to the often closed barriers at the level crossings. With the commissioning of the tunnel and the new route, the previous route through the city center was abandoned.

On May 6, 2011, an accident occurred in the tunnel. In the accident, the stoker of a steam locomotive from the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum was injured when he leaned out of the window in the tunnel and collided with a switched off light that protruded improperly into the clearance profile . The locomotive was on its way to Bruges (Westf) to pull special BFS trains there the next day .

The Goldberg Tunnel is not equipped with modern tunnel rescue systems such as emergency exits . For technical assistance in the event of an accident, the DB AG purchased an emergency fire engine. This is operated by the Hagen-Wehringhausen volunteer fire department .
