The Stadtgarten Hagen was founded in 1884 by the citizens of Hagen , who donated money for the acquisition of the property and founded the "Aktiengesellschaft Hagener Stadtgarten". It is located in the Wehringhausen district .

The landscaping of the rising terrain on the lower Goldberghang was done according to the designs of the horticultural company Gebr. Siesmayer, under the direction of Heinrich Siesmayer (1817–1900) from Frankfurt-Bockenheim. The park was designed for walking and was divided into small, woody areas. Most of the paths are curved. In the center there is a small pond, the parking garage is now used as a restoration, and Karl Ernst Osthaus's house adjoining the park has now become a museum .

In 1900 the shareholders donated the park to the city of Hagen, presumably because the fee charged was insufficient for maintenance. Since then, it has been freely accessible without an entrance fee and is an important local recreation area between the city center and the Hagen city forest .

The city garden has remained largely unchanged to this day. In the immediate vicinity are the Fichte-Gymnasium, the general hospital with the kidney and dialysis center and the Bismarck tower on the Goldberg.
