Bismarck Tower in Hagen

The Hagen Bismarck Tower in memory of the first Chancellor of the German Empire , Otto von Bismarck , is located in the Westphalian town of Hagen on the nearby Goldberg .

Construction of the tower

As one of the first Bismarckian columns , the tower was built in 1900/1901 by the construction company B. Liebold & Co. from Holzminden according to a design by the architect Wilhelm Kreis . In 1899, Kreis had created a basic tower design "Götterdämmerung" in the form of a massive fire pillar for a competition of the " German Student Union ", which was awarded by the initiators and built 47 times by 1911. The construction of the tower in Hagen was based closely on this design and was completed on July 2, 1901. Ruhr sandstone was used for the exterior of the tower and hewn greywacke was used for the interior . The only exterior decoration of the tower is the relief of the imperial eagle with Bismarck's coat of arms on the entrance side.

The tower stands at a height of 265  m and has a total height of 24 meters. The Bismarck Tower is located on the Hagen “Drei-Türme-Weg”, a 6 km long hiking trail on the Goldberg - Bismarck Tower - Kaiser Friedrich Tower - Eugen Richter Tower .

Decay and redevelopment

From April 2006, access to the tower was not possible due to its dilapidation. The city of Hagen did not want to have the Bismarck Tower renovated due to estimated renovation costs of over € 500,000, access to the tower was blocked by a temporary site fence. On January 11, 2011, the Friends of Bismarck Tower Hagen eV was founded, which had set itself the goal of renovating the tower and making it accessible again. The building was extensively renovated by the end of June 2014 thanks to donations, grants from the NRW Foundation and the contribution made by the association.

reopening

On July 5, 2014, the Bismarck Tower in Hagen was reopened as part of a big celebration. Since then, the building has been open to visitors on certain days.
