The Kaiser Friedrich Tower in Haspe

The Kaiser-Friedrich-Turm in memory of Kaiser Friedrich III stands in the Westphalian city of Hagen above the Haspe district .

In May 1891 a wooden tower was built on the Hesterthardt , which was struck by lightning on July 2, 1901. The wooden tower was overturned by a storm in 1903. With the help of donations of 10,000 marks from the population of Haspe, the then independent town of Haspe built a stone tower.
The tower was inaugurated by the then mayor Georg Frank on September 25, 1910 with the words:

“But the joy of the successful building mixes sadness and pain when we remember who this monument is dedicated to out of gratitude and admiration, when we think of the hero of Königgrätz, the victor of Weißenburg and Wörth, when we think of 'our Fritz'. "

The tower is a brick tower and has a natural stone facing. The facing material was broken in the immediate vicinity of the tower. The natural sandstone plinths come from Herdecke . Above the entrance there is a relief portrait of the former emperor made of bronze by the sculptor Arnold Künne . A farm building was built next to the tower in 1892, which was used as a tower keeper's apartment. The building is now used as an excursion restaurant.

The tower had to be closed in 1988 because of dilapidation. After a restoration for 310,000 DM by the city of Hagen, the tower was reopened on June 13, 1993. From March 2009 to November 2009 the tower was closed due to renewed damage.

The Kaiser-Friedrich-Turm stands on a 372 meter high mountain and at 17 meters is the highest vantage point in Hagen. It is located on the Hagen “Drei-Türme-Weg”, a 6 km long hiking trail on the Goldberg - Bismarck Tower - Kaiser-Friedrich-Turm - Eugen-Richter-Turm .
