Arnold Künne
Arnold Künne (born March 5, 1866 in Altena , † May 25, 1942 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Arnold Künne was the son of the gold and silver goods manufacturer Albrecht Künne (1833–1912) in Altena. The company was founded in 1820 by grandfather Arnold Künne (1796–1872). Arnold Künne received his first training in his father's workshop. At the age of 20 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich on May 1, 1886 , and attended classes with the well-known sculptor Syrius Eberle . A little later he switched to Albert Wolff at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, where he finished his studies in 1891.
In the following decades, up to the First World War, numerous works were created in his own studio in Charlottenburg , mainly monuments with statues, busts and reliefs. This career was largely over with the end of the war. Up until his death there was hardly any major work. Arnold Künne died shortly after his studio was destroyed by a bomb attack on Berlin.
Künne seems to have been friends with the writer Peter Hille . When his remains were transferred to an honorary grave in the city of Berlin (St. Matthias Cemetery) in 1938, he unsuccessfully offered to design his grave slab and tombstone. This was refused; Künne even excluded from the memorial ceremony.
Services
Arnold Künne was a talented sculptor from the Berlin School of Sculpture . His work hit the public taste of the German Empire, which earned him many commissions in the context of city beautification.
