Syrius Eberle (born December 9, 1844 in Pfronten , Allgäu , † April 12, 1903 in Bozen , South Tyrol ) was a German sculptor and painter.

Life

Eberle was the son of a carpenter and grew up in the "Stapferhaus" in Pfronten. He was married to the daughter of the painter Thomas Driendl , who also came from Pfronten .

Eberle first made an apprenticeship as a carpenter and studied 1866–1872 at the Royal Art Academy in Munich. From 1884 he was there himself a professor in the field of "religious sculpture". His students included Georg Pezold , Heinrich Düll , Heinrich Waderé , Johann Vierthaler , Max Heilmaier , Georg Wrba , Georg Busch , Clemens Buscher , Josef Rauch , Bruno Diamant , Josef Floßmann , August Drumm , Emil Dittler , Heinrich Jobst and Ignatius Taschner .

From the Bavarian fairy tale king Ludwig II , Eberle received a number of orders to decorate the newly built castles, also for individual figures, groups, centerpieces, almost all luxury carriages and sleighs.

Eberle created the former war memorial in Kempten (Allgäu) on the site of today's bus station; the bronze figures were melted down during World War II .

In 1889 his design won only the 3rd prize in a tender for a Brothers Grimm National Monument in Hanau . But those responsible argued about the first-placed design by the sculptor Max Wiese , which is why they asked Wilhelm Grimm's son , the art and literary historian Herman Grimm in Berlin, for his opinion. This decided on Eberle's design, and the order to build the monument was given to him. The ceremonial unveiling of the monument took place on October 18, 1896.

1890-1892 Eberle created the four pylons for Munich's Ludwigsbrücke . The monument to Franz Xaver Gabelsberger , the inventor of shorthand , in Munich's Ottostraße was also created by him in 1890 .

As a professor at the Munich Art Academy, Eberle was a member of the commission in 1893 that had to assess the proposals for the new building of the Bavarian National Museum (1894/95).

He also won the August 1897 competition for the Kaiser Wilhelm I equestrian statue in Nuremberg . But he died before it was carried out, so Wilhelm von Rümann took over the job.

Eberle was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art and the Munich Albrecht Dürer Association , an association of Munich art academy students founded in 1885 by the sculptor Georg Busch . Eberle also gave composing evenings on Christian topics here.

Eberle finally spent his old age in Bozen (South Tyrol), where he also died in 1903.

Japan's fondness for the Brothers Grimm and their collection of fairy tales led in 1989 to the casting of this monument on a 1: 1 scale for the "Kingdom of Fortune" Kofuko , an amusement park in Obihiro on the island of Hokkaidō .
