The term qepHom ([ qʰɛpʰχom ] dt. Small meeting ) is generally used for any type of meeting where the Klingon language developed for Star Trek is practiced. In Germany this word has become a synonym for an annual Klingon seminar in Saarbrücken , as this is the only one of its kind in Europe.

background

The annual general meeting of the American Klingon Institute is called qep'a ' , Klingon for "great gathering". The counterpart to this, the qepHom , literally means "small meeting" and was originally intended as a small, informal meeting of two to three people who meet on regular short-term appointments to speak Klingon. Due to the low density of Klingonists within Europe, which is not sufficient for a short-term meeting, the Klingon expert Lieven Litaer founded a weekend seminar lasting several days, which is called qepHom .

Attendees

More and more people interested in Klingon, who are mainly of European origin, are taking part in the Saarbrücken Klingon Seminar, but there are also participants from Canada and the USA . European participants with the longest journeys came from Sweden , Romania , Poland and Great Britain . Most of the students are of German origin, which is why the main language of instruction is German.

A majority of the participants have a great interest in Star Trek in addition to Klingon, but people who have no direct relationship with it, such as linguistics or sociology students, regularly take part.

procedure

The weekend seminar initially lasted from Friday to Sunday, and since the tenth anniversary in 2011 the course has already started on Thursdays. Due to the different lengths of arrival of the participants, the course officially begins on the first day with dinner together, with many participants practicing and speaking Klingon in the course of the afternoon.

During the entire meeting, the Klingon language will be explained to beginners from the ground up through lectures and exercises, while advanced learners will deal with the language independently.

Since 2006 the course has traditionally ended with a cozy drink in the evening, during which many participants also dress up as Klingons .

Other venues

In the past few years there have been several meetings in Germany that have lived up to their literal definition of a "small meeting". These did not take place regularly and were hosted by different people. The locations were Bochum 2001, Waiblingen 2002 and 2004, Mülheim an der Ruhr 2006 and 2007.

Also in the USA z. B. Regular meetings of this kind take place in Chicago , which, however, with only a handful of participants, rather correspond to the original meaning of the "small meeting".
