Louis Constanz Berger , also Louis Constant Berger Witten , (born August 28, 1829 in Witten , † August 9, 1891 in Horchheim near Koblenz ) was an industrialist and liberal politician from Witten .

Life

Berger's father was the industrialist Carl Ludwig Berger , who founded the cast steel factory Carl Berger & Co. (later the cast steel plant in Witten , today Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Specialty Steel ).

He joined his father's company and developed the manufacture of cast steel gun barrels , which gave the company a significant boom. In 1873 the company was converted into a stock corporation and Berger moved from Witten and from then on devoted himself only to politics .

Berger was a member of the Prussian Landtag from 1865 to 1891 and a member of the German Reichstag from 1874 to 1881 . He was one of the supporters of the Reich Military Law of 1874. Originally he belonged to the Progress Party and later, together with Loewe-Calbe, formed a separate faction between the National Liberals and the Progress Party.

Because of his services to the promotion of rail traffic conditions , in particular his commitment to the construction of the Wengerohr - Wittlich railway connection , which was inaugurated in 1885 , he was made the first honorary citizen of the city of Wittlich in 1884 . In 2000, the Maare-Mosel-Radweg on the former railway line in Wittlich was named "Louis-Berger-Weg".

A good ten years after Berger's death in 1891, the Witten gymnastics community had the Berger memorial erected in Witten from 1848 from 1902 to 1904 in honor of its co-founder . The Witten Culture Forum is located in the Villa Berger , built in 1839 and the family seat on Ruhrstrasse in Witten .

His grave is in today's Luther Park.
