Lorenz Kellner (born January 29, 1811 in Kalteneber , a district of Heiligenstadt , † August 18, 1892 in Trier ) was an important Catholic teacher of the 19th century. Kellner was also politically active as a member of the Prussian House of Representatives (1848–1849) and the Prussian State Parliament (1867–1870).

Life

The son of the teacher and Pestalozzi student Heinrich Kellner attended elementary school in Heiligenstadt from 1816 to 1822 and the grammar schools in Heiligenstadt and Hildesheim from 1822 to 1828 . For financial reasons, he was unable to complete a study of Catholic theology that he was striving for. Instead, he attended the Protestant teacher training college in Magdeburg from 1828 to 1831, where he largely financed his living through private lessons. Until 1831 he attended the teachers' college in Magdeburg.

From 1831 to 1836 he worked as a teacher at the elementary schools in Mackenrode and Erfurt , and from 1833 as rector. From 1836 to 1848 he was a seminar teacher at the newly founded teachers' seminar in Heiligenstadt, which was led by his father. In 1838 his first wife died after two years of marriage. In 1848 he was appointed government and school councilor in the Marienwerder district. From 1848 to 1849 he was also a member of the Prussian House of Representatives .

From 1855 to 1886 he worked as a government and school council in Trier. On his 75th birthday, January 29, 1886, he and his principles were honored with over 50,000 signatures. From 1867 to 1870 he was a member of the constituency of St. Wendel in the Prussian state parliament . In 1863 the Münster Academy awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy. In 1871 he was appointed a secret councilor. From 1872 onwards he was a member of the commission for advising primary schools and seminars.

In the culture war between the Prussian state and the Catholic Church, his position remained untouched despite his church-loyal attitude as a result of good relations with the Trier district president. The Catholic Teachers' Association made him an honorary member in 1891.

Lorenz Kellner is one of the most important Catholic educators of the 19th century. In addition to his educational, administrative and political activities, he also left an extensive written work. With particular commitment he tried to improve the material and social situation of elementary school teachers .

In 1892 he died of influenza and was buried in a grave of honor in the cemetery of the St. Paulin parish in Trier .
