The Eduard Pape Monument was a monument to the cityscape in honor of Heinrich Eduard von Pape . The monument stood on the market square in Brilon opposite the historic town hall .

Prehistory and establishment

The monument was erected in 1899. Not the Brilon population, but mainly scientists, civil servants, lawyers and scholars from the empire called for the monument to be erected. The cost was 30,000 marks . Donations were received from a number of government, state and local authorities as well as from numerous private individuals. The Chancellor Prince Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst and Kaiser Wilhelm II also made a donation to the city.

The ceremonial unveiling took place on September 13, 1899 in the presence of numerous state and church dignitaries. The emperor congratulated the city in a special cabinet letter.

description

In front of a monumental architecture built from Rüthener green sandstone according to a design by the architect Carl Moritz , the simple, larger-than-life seated figure of Papes rose, cast in bronze based on a model by the sculptor Arnold Künne . The towering architecture, overloaded with symbolic jewelry, contradicted the simple sculpture .

Differences and demolition

After a short time, the initial enthusiasm of the Brilon citizens evaporated. In order to erect the monument, a large part of the market square was raised significantly. As a result, the adjacent streets became narrower and traffic was significantly impeded. The merchants, who had benefited from the pre-existing thoroughfare, suffered significant losses that they wanted the city to replace. Also the Kump was almost completely filled in by the increase. The well-known city fountain with elaborate decorations was hardly to be seen. The Schnadezug could no longer pull “three times around the kump”, as was tradition. Conservationists and large parts of the population called for the facility to be downsized and moved to another location. Another demand was the lowering of the market place to the previous level. In 1908, 71 Brilon citizens submitted an application to the magistrate to remove the fillings and enclosures at the Pape monument. Donations were called for for this measure. However, there was a lack of financial resources for the construction work.

The First World War brought the solution to the problem in an unexpected way. The armaments industry needed metal and raw materials became scarce. In 1917 the bronze figure was requisitioned and melted down. The city was compensated with 3,000 marks. The monument was thus deprived of its most important component. During the revolutionary turmoil in 1918/1919 , the monument architecture made of natural stone was gradually demolished by the population and probably used elsewhere.

The increase in the market square was reversed, today nothing reminds of the complex.
