The Harkorthaus (Burgstrasse 17) in Wetter (Ruhr) is a half-timbered house with slate roofing , built around 1700 and owned by the Harkort family of patricians and entrepreneurs . The most famous representative of the family, Friedrich Harkort , lived in the house for a while in the 1850s. Since 1985 the building has been entered in the architectural monument list of Wetter .

In 1818 Friedrich Harkort (1793–1880) founded the mechanical workshops Harkort & Co. , one of the first mechanical engineering companies in the Ruhr area, in the vacant Burg Wetter together with Heinrich Kamp (1786–1853) and with the help of the English technician Edward Thomas . In addition to the castle, he also acquired the Burgmannenhof (Burgstrasse 26) and lived there for a time until he left the company in 1832. The neighboring houses in the old castle freedom also included the dilapidated, old, reformed schoolhouse from Wetter, which was owned by one in 1840 Harkort's business partner, Carl Gravemann , was acquired to give his now highly indebted friend accommodation. The children of Harkort took over the house in 1845 and in the 1850s he temporarily moved back to Wetter. The house remained in the family until 1922 and came into the possession of the city of Wetter in 1926, which then set up a memorial to the " father of the Ruhr area " in the "Harkorthaus" .

After a temporary use as a youth hostel , the Harkorthaus is now the city archive of the city of Wetter .
