The Villa Gustav Lohmann is one of the representative entrepreneur villas of the Lohmann family on Ruhrstrasse in Witten , North Rhine-Westphalia .

Building history and architecture

The house was built from 1873 onwards on behalf of Gustav Lohmann (1847–1934) on the Ruhrstrasse 78 property. The design is characterized by historicism and “Italian” style. The facade consists of representative Parisian sandstone and is structured by five window axes as well as two fully developed and one mezzanine floor . The mighty central risalit with a flight of stairs and a two-story portico also sets a clear accent .

The main house was laid out in the immediate vicinity of the Lohmann family's grain distillery. At the same time as the main building, a greenhouse and a gardener's and coachman's house were built behind the house.

The ground floor of the villa originally served purely representative purposes. The portal led to a reception room, to the right of which was the master's room , which could also be reached from the side entrance on the right side of the building. On the left, the reception room, salon and dining room formed a connected suite ( enfilade ). The family's private rooms were on the first floor, while all of the work rooms and staff quarters were in the basement, on the mezzanine floor or completely outside the building.

After 1882 and after 1903, the front of the building was redesigned twice, mainly by closing the pedestal to the outside staircase and making other minor corrections to the front.

Wilhelm Dittmann, founder of the Dittmann & Neuhaus company , acquired the building around 1900 .

During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged, with the roof structure and mezzanine floor burning out.

The villa has been a listed building since 1985 . It is part of the route of industrial culture .

Behind the villa there was originally a richly furnished landscape garden , which offered an idyllic picture with curved paths, a moving terrain relief, extensive lawns, groups of trees, ornamental beds, a pond with a bridge and a grotto . The garden design was greatly simplified in the course of the 20th century, the pond was filled in.

In 2018, the ensemble of the hourglass-shaped pond including the arched bridge at the narrow point and the adjoining cave structure was rediscovered and also placed under monument protection in 2019. The garden grotto was named Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe by the LWL Monument Preservation, Landscape and Building Culture in Westphalia in May 2020 .

  1. The online guide " baukunst-nrw " published by the Chamber of Architects in North Rhine-Westphalia incorrectly states the construction date as 1865 and names the architect Wilhelm Bovensiepen from Kupferdreh as the probable originator, but names the life data of the client Gustav Lohmann, which was well before the construction time lie. The building request is dated May 3, 1873, the building permit to July 4, 1873. (cf. Kristina Schramm, Daniele Guagliardo: Villa Gustav Lohmann, Baugeschichte. )
