The Krupp parent company was initially a slated half-timbered building built as an overseer's house in the years 1818/1819, and later the residence of the Krupp industrialist family from Essen . After being destroyed in the war, it was reconstructed true to the original in 1961.

From the overseer to the residential building

Friedrich Krupp (* 1787, † 1826) had this small building built as an overseer's house near his smelter, which was founded in 1811, after it had been removed from the fulling mill in Altenessenhad been relocated to the family property on what was then Mühlheimer Chaussee in front of Limbecker Tor, today Altendorfer Straße. First eight melting furnaces went into operation on October 18, 1819. But in 1824 Friedrich Krupp vacated the house where he was born on Flachsmarkt for financial reasons. Because of this need, he and his family moved to this overseer house on the factory premises. Only two years later, following a family tradition, Friedrich Krupp had to be carried to the grave from this parent house, where he was buried in the former Protestant cemetery between First and Second Weberstrasse in Essen. The company, which at the time only employed seven people, was in debt with 10,000 thalers and was passed on to his wife Therese Krupp to avert the burden of debt from the children. Therese founded with her sister-in-law Helene von Müller nee Krupp the Krupp cast steel factory . The son of Friedrich and Therese Krupp, Alfred , then began in the first half of the 19th century to expand the company into what was then the largest industrial company in Europe.

Transition to the next generation

The main building was expanded in 1844 by a larger two-story extension. This served as the home of the Krupp family until Alfred Krupp became the sole owner of the company in 1848. A year later, Therese, Alfred's mother, left the house. In 1854, Friedrich Alfred Krupp (* 1854, † 1902), the only son of the couple Alfred Krupp and Bertha Krupp born a year earlier, was born in the attached house of the parent company . Eichhoff. The family's residence next to the main building remained for a few years.

The end as a residential building

The old parent company no longer met the representative requirements of the rapidly growing company. The family then moved into a new residential building on the factory premises with gardens in 1861, with the old parent house being given a new role as a lithographic institute. In 1873, however, the Krupp family moved to the stately Villa Hügel . Alfred Krupp took his old parent house as a model for his residential construction plans to build workers' apartments. After Alfred Krupp died in 1887, he was still laid out in the old headquarters. His son Friedrich Alfred Krupp was also attached to the family's old ancestral home and had an office set up here until he, too, was carried to his grave from here in 1902.

After the Second World War

During the Second World War , the old head office was completely destroyed by bombing in October 1944. In 1961, on the occasion of the company's 150th anniversary, the parent company, which symbolizes the future and the past, was rebuilt about 100 meters from the original location according to old plans.

The training workshop of Krupp Gemeinschaftsbetriebe GmbH with eight training halls for lathe operators, welders, locksmiths and electricians was built in the sixties directly adjacent to the site northwest of the parent company . This included a canteen and an administration building with a branch of the Sparkasse Essen. After the training workshop was closed, DEKRA rented a room there for a short time before these buildings were completely demolished in the 1990s.

In August 2002, the city archeology of Essen found poorly preserved remains of the old hammer mill , which had been built here in 1852, and three steam-powered hand hammers designed by Alfred Krupp's own designs near the main building .

In 2010 and 2011 the house was repaired externally and renovated inside. At the end of 2011, the parent company and site were transferred back to the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation for a symbolic price . The interior was repaired and reconstructed according to old plans and photos. Wallpaper and curtains have been reproduced, power lines that are not functional have been laid back on the plaster and original lamps have been hung up that work with additional lines laid according to today's standards. In the office is the desk chair that Friedrich Alfred Krupp really used, the desk is a replica from 1961.
