The Rott house is a representative, but never completely finished property in the Broich-Speldorfer Wald in Mülheim an der Ruhr .

Building history

The Rott house was a construction project by Broich-Speldorfer Wald- und Gartenstadt AG. A prominent investor was the industrialist Hugo Stinnes , who had already secured an extensive piece of land in the Broich-Speldorfer Wald in 1903 and was planning a prestigious residence there for himself and his wife Clare. By the summer of 1914, two porter's houses, a farm building and a guest and tea house had been completed. However, before the foundation stone for the manor house could be laid, the First World War broke out and destroyed all further construction work.

Despite the lack of the main building, Haus Rott served Hugo Stinnes and his family as a weekend residence, and after the owner's death in 1924 it was also used as their main residence. In the 1950s, the widow Clare Stinnes had another house built, but it was demolished again in later years. In 1954/55 a mausoleum was built in a wooded area in the northern part of the property , into which the remains of Hugo Stinnes were transferred.

In 1967 the industrialist Herbert Grillo from Mülheim bought the property from the widow, who was guaranteed a lifelong right of residence with the purchase agreement. After her death in 1973, the buyer's family moved in. The former farm building was converted into a horse stable, and the spacious area converted into a training ground for the horses of the Grillo family. The mausoleum with the remains of Hugo and now also Clare Stinnes remained - as provided for in the purchase contract - and was still looked after by the new owners. After moving in, the Grillo family combined the property belonging to Haus Rott with the adjacent property, Villa Fritz Thyssen , which they had also acquired.
