Zollverein Industrial Cultural Landscape is the name of the second themed section of the Industrial Culture Route . The Zeche Zollverein , a World Heritage Site since 2001 , funded from 1847 to 1986 and the Zollverein coking plant with its preliminary stages, kilns and machine ovens, existed from 1857 to 1993. Both were the center of life in northern Essen . In the vicinity of the colliery, the director's villa and workers' settlements , places of worship and infrastructures were created that are representative of the development of the Ruhr area .

In December 2008 and the beginning of 2010, the RVR changed the route in terms of content and order. These changes are shown in italics.
