Theobaldstrasse settlement
The Theobaldstrasse settlement in Essen - Katernberg was the last workers' settlement built by the Zollverein's master mine builders .
history
The settlement started in 1912 was named after Theobald Haniel . It was very popular with the miners for two reasons: On the one hand, it was close to Zollverein shaft 1/2, so that a longer approach, as would have been necessary with the old settlements, was avoided. On the other hand, its design was much more modern and lighter than the old brick-style Zollverein settlements. In line with the garden city idea, the street lines were more spacious and laid out with green strips, the roof and gable shapes were varied, and the outer walls were brightly plastered.
The Haniel family also took care of workers' concerns outside of the settlement construction. She built or supported churches, set up social welfare offices and schools, and made a financial contribution to other public institutions near the settlement.
