The Schonnebeck youth hall is a gymnasium and festival hall in the Schonnebeck district of Essen , which was opened in 1914 as a Werkbundhalle and is now a listed building.

history

The building, initially known as the Werkbundhalle, was built for young people by the architects Schreiterer & Below for the Niederheinische Dorf laid out by Georg Metzendorf at the Cologne Werkbund exhibition in 1914. Since the elementary wooden construction could be completely dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere at the end of the exhibition, the then mayor's office of Stoppenberg acquired the hall in 1915 for 28,000  marks and had it built on a plot of land provided free of charge by the Zollverein colliery .

During the Second World War , the hall was used to intern French and Italian prisoners of war. After that it was used again as a gymnasium and event hall, also by the Schiller School, but fell into disrepair. In 1989 it was listed as a historical monument, closed shortly afterwards and reopened in 1996 after several years of renovation.

Today the GSG youth hall Schonnebeck is a cross-district meeting and event center for young and old with offers from the sports and health sector. It is operated by the Essen Sports Association and is a station on the route of industrial culture .

background

At the time the hall is being built, children and young people should be offered a place, especially in winter, where they can pursue their urge to move and find play and care facilities. In summer, the outdoors and the surrounding area were more used, in winter, however, the cramped space conditions in the apartments at that time and the shift work of the fathers often caused conflicts.

The economic situation of the residential areas or housing cooperatives did not offer the possibility of building a permanent house for this purpose. With the demountable hall, which was made from wooden parts at a reasonable price, Georg Metzendorf, the architect of the Deutscher Werkbund, presented a new idea as part of his contribution to the Niederrheinisches Dorf exhibition of how small communities could also afford their own event location. The hall is one of the few remaining pieces from this Werkbund exhibition.

The construction consists of curved glue-layer binders. The system of vertical wooden stands is filled with intermediate boards running across them. The vertical stands stand out because of their red color.
